Summer vacation

Summer vacation is a wonderful midwestern tradition. The idea of taking extended time off when business is slower and the children have nearly forgotten about the upcoming school year restores the soul. It also gives us a chance to think on bigger issues while the daily tasks of running a household, earning a living and shuttling the children to their next event on time, with the right equipment and close to their friends is temporarily suspended.

My recent summer vacation helped put things into perspective. We traveled with several families from Granville over the course of nearly a month who took turns sharing our cottage with us. I took a few brief escapes to get a little business in between hiking, fishing and enjoying some great meals. Most of the families who visited us had never heard of The Granville Press. None were aware of the proposed Owens Corning development. Their total knowledge of River Road development issues consisted of near memorization of the menu at River Road Coffee, the Wine Cache and Short Story. No one seemed to care, even in passing, if Kraner developed his property or not. Most everyone agreed that Park Trails had nearly no impact (good or bad) on the community or the schools. Everyone believed that another 500 or so homes would likely be built somewhere near or in Granville once SR 161 is fully operational.

Everyone thought Granville schools were a good and worthwhile element of the community. There was near universal consensus that the schools were over rated by most in the community. Everyone agreed that the schools were no better than any other school system where they had lived previously.

We all felt blessed to have extended vacations away from the hustle and ego's of Granville. We genuinely enjoy our good fortune of the accident of our birth in the United States. We do so enjoy the opportunity to live in Granville.

Everyone (except me) plans to leave Granville once the children graduate from high school. Each couple plans to relocate to more attractive communities with more amenities offering lower property taxes.

Summer vacation. An idea to be shared and enjoyed with everybody.
