Governor Strickland To Support Southwest Licking For Owens?

The Granville Township Trustees are seeking $5 million in state funds to help Owens Corning develop the site of its research park. But, there has been opposition to the grant’s proposal that the Southwest Licking Community Water and Sewer District supply the sewer services to the site. In an email to fellow Granville Township Trustee Wes Sargent, Trustee Bill Habig stated that “I plan to ask the governor’s help and that of my pals in ODOD.”

In an email on May 28 obtained by The Granville Press in a public records request, Habig asked Sargent to go to a District 17 Ohio Public Works Commission committee meeting at which the Owens grant request would be proposed for transmittal forward to the state for review.

Trustee Habig told Trustee Sargent, “Poggemeyer is putting together a high quality PowerPoint and handout for this meeting next Friday [June 6, 2008 at 9:30 am in the Planning Commission Conference Room of the Hill Administration Building in Newark]. Can you attend as our representative?”

You can just chit chat, smile and lobby the heck out of everyone,” Habig told Sargent.

Sargent went to the meeting on June 6 and afterwards, wrote back to Habig, Trustee Fred Abraham, and Township Fiscal Officer Norm Kennedy:

The presentation for the $5 million grant for Owens went off very well today. Jim Eckert from Owens and Phil Honsey from Poggemeyer did excellent jobs in their presentations. There are only 5 seeking grants and I think it’s 6 that can be sent on to the state for their consideration. Therefore, we are almost assured to be sent to state for another presentation. A couple of the panel were township trustees (of course I don’t know their names), but they told me we had the best presentation thus far. Sounds good.

Bill - the only thing I can think of for the next presentation is to come up with a number of possible employment positions that this development could provide. It would have to be well over 1000 and probably much higher than that.

It was a fun day, and I was happy to fill in for you, Bill. Hope you are having fun.

Wes”

According to its web site, the Ohio Department of Development (ODOD) “promotes economic opportunities to improve the profits and prosperity of Ohio’s citizens. The Department acting in a support role provides financial, informational, and technical assistance to those making an investment in Ohio’s future.”

As a cabinet level agency, the Department oversees a full portfolio of programs including: business attraction and retention, small business growth, technology commercialization, export promotion, travel promotion, energy efficiency, affordable housing, community infrastructure, downtown revitalization and brownfield clean-up.”

Bill Habig apparently feels he has significant influence with the governor and staff members of the ODOD.

I plan to ask the governor’s help and that of my pals in ODOD.” - Gee, I’m not sure, but maybe that is the language from Habig’s email that refers to the governor.

Since you missed the cite to Habig’s email in the article itself, here it is again:

    Reading comprehension

You appear to have excellent reading skills. Perhaps you could help me find the link to Governor Strickland’s e-mail, press conference, or statement were he has voiced support of this project and specifically a preference for SWL sewers servicing the Owens property. Your help is appreciated. That is what the headline implies, does it not?

The meaning of the question mark

Please note that the headline has a question mark at the end of it. To me that implies a question, rather than a statement of fact.

    Your ignorance is remarkable

Really, it is. I bet you believe that Fox News is “fair and balanced” too.

    Tiresome

    My eyes are bleeding!

This site continues to put words in other people’s mouths. How tiresome. I’m trying to figure out where in Habig’s / Sargent’s comments did they mention Governor Strickland, Southwest Licking or influence with the governor.

Maybe I missed a link that provided such language, but regardless, you guys really need to stick with facts and stop with the opinionated one-sided, facts-be-damned attack pieces. It’s unbecoming, but very telling about your own agenda driven political maneuverings, and it stinks.

Maybe by “cabinet level position” you made the leap to the governor and felt compelled to put his picture in the lead story. If we can yeild 1,000 jobs out of this opportunity, then who the heck cares if SWL provides utilities. Granville has only had FOREVER to extend utilities to it’s first non-village property owner in support of economic development (Kendal and the schools are a far cry from economic development, albeit, Kedal is close).

Owens Corning is the taxpayer, and our trustees owe them the courtesy of pursuing the request of utilities for their development. Why does this site continue to hammer the trustees? Why not gather up all your buddies protesting the war and go sit out on the OCF land and picket OCF for having the very patient forethought to develop their land?

I’ll wait to hear the governor’s pitch in favor of SWL utilities for OCF. In the meantime, let Habig do his job. He seems to be the only Granville politician out in front of the looming traffic explosion that a four lane highway will bring. Everyone wants to sit around and deny zoning to affect change. At least he’s out in front of it.

Start finding other / better alternatives, else run the risk of being thought of a naysayers, who bring NOTHING to the table.

    The Clock is Running.

    "Journalism"

This site exemplifies today’s media. Two hundred and fifty dollars for a Unix based server, internet access, and a (free) copy of Wordpress, you can be a “journalist” too!

    Be nicer please

I hope everyone at this site will be nicer to each other. I especially hope cyclenut will consider stopping being so insulting to everyone. The tone of his comments sounds just plain mean and his points get lost in his attitude. The site shouldn’t sound like a locker room of teenage boys. Some women (your wives, daughters and sisters) feel comfortable with a little more courtesy. Thank you.

    Just the facts

That’s all I ask for. And if you would take a moment to read some of the posts on this board, you will find that my criticism of the Granville Press has been harsh, but not insulting at all to any member here. If you refer to my “Ignorance” post, I don’t know what to say. Ignorance is ignorance, I can’t think of a more polite term. Lacking in depth of thought? Neither is friendly, but it’s the truth.

I’ve went out of my way to be indifferent to members who have made snide remarks simply because they I have a difference of opinion. But being PC just isn’t my style.

One last thing I would ask is to take one more look at this headline. Any reasonable person would expect to see a full fledged press conference from the Governor stating his preference for SWL. Then the article mentions one sentence from an e-mail that Habig PLANS to ASK the governor for help. The rest is just filler.

If that isn’t a play pulled right from a tabloid’s playbook to sell mags, I don’t know what is. The GP should be ashamed of their behavior.

    Thanks, Bill....

…for going ahead and using your influence at the state level to get things done with out the input or discussion of the people you represent. Since we are obviously not wise/smart enough to make good decisions on our own I appreciate you for your commitment to raise Granville to the level of the other communities you’ve ‘helped” in the past.

Keep up the good work, I know you care.

BTW: Just how long HAVE you lived in this community? I’m sure if there were an election today you would be a winner by a landslide!!!
