We have lost one of the greats...

Tim Russert died earlier this afternoon.

It is a great loss to our country and our world. This was a man who came to his job fully prepared. The depth of his research in preparation for Meet the Press was obvious to most who watched the show. And, it was, I suspect, quite unnerving for a number of his guests.

Despite his political background, it would be hard to legitimately accuse him of sparing anyone for he was truly an equal opportunity questioner. Whether it was a democrat or a republican, he would thoroughly explore the issues and, when it made sense, remind the politician of earlier statements that contrasted with the current position.

He brought an unusual degree of insight into the political process. In this era of talking heads on 24-hour news networks going on and on about meaningless "news" items, his ability to cut to the essentials, to focus on what really counts was a refreshing difference.

A superb newsman. He will be missed.
