Granville Recreation District Levy Deserves Your "yes" Vote
The one mill levy for parks and recreation highly deserves your "yes" vote.
This is an easy recommendation to make for a couple reasons. First, the cost is quite minimal and, second, the benefits provided by this levy are intertwined with so many aspects of Granville’s quality of life.
The levy will support the Granville Recreation District. After careful study the District was formed earlier this year through a collaborative effort of the Granville Recreation Commission, the Granville School Board, the Township Trustees and the Village Council.
The District’s stated mission is to "develop, manage and coordinate recreational, educational, social, cultural and athletic activities and facilities for citizens of all ages within the District." The District has the same boundaries as the Granville School District.
Why is the cost so minimal? The one mill levy for the Granville Recreation District will replace the existing one mill Granville Recreation Commission levy. For Granville Township homeowners this makes for a very small tax increase that would cost less than $7.50 a year to the owner of a $300,000 house. Those outside Granville Township would see a higher increase, but the existing out-of-township user fees are being dropped.
The Commission has provided traditional recreation programs as well as events such as Concert on the Green and Fourth of July games. Other programs include support for Senior Fellowship, the Teen Center, community gardens, and the dog park.

Kudos to the GRC for having the vision to do this
It’s easy to rest on your laurels when you’ve had the kind of success and standing in the community the GRC has had. They recognized the challenges they faced and came to a studied conclusion about what’s best for the community before things turned south. IMO the new district structure seems like the obvious step. We’ll certainly be voting yes!
A definite 'yes' for rec district
Dollar for dollar, the rec commission (now the rec district) probably provides more to Granville’s quality of life than any other single levy. The parks, the sports, the music and the many other programs are an incredible bargain at one mill — the amount we already pay in Granville. Adding the rest of the school district (Park Trails, some of Union Township) to our recreation district is a win-win for everyone.
Other tax levies
Does anyone think that all the tax levies on the ballot may hurt each other? I think there are four or five differennt ones — the Reccreation Commission, CTEC, seniors, the Township and maybe more. If the Township roads levy is the least needed, I wonder if it might hurt the Rec commission or vice versa. Any other opinions?
Township roads levy might hurt the others
Yes, I think the Township roads levy may hurt the others. That’s what makes the Township roads levy disappointing — why ask for more money in this sort of economy when you don’t really need it?
Doesn’t make sense to me.
trustees-do the right thing and tell people to vote no on roads
If the trustees were smart they would admit they made a mistake and ask people to forget their roads tax hike and vote for the rec levy senior levy,.. instead.
But I’m not holding my breath.
Don
Great program at a low cost
Ever since the Rec Commission was formed back in the early 1970s it has added to what people think of when they think of Granville. Great program.
Count my vote as a yes.
